Er irrte sich: Die gesamte Familie – eine »glückliche Familie«, wie Zilli sagt – wurde nach Auschwitz-Birkenau verschleppt. Die 96-jährige Sintiza berichtet in dem erschütternden und zugleich berührenden animierten Kurzfilm von der Ermordung ihres Töchterchens und eines Großteils ihrer Familie in den Gaskammern, von ihrem Überlebenskampf, dem Weg zurück ins Leben und ihrem Glauben nach dem Völkermord. Der durch den RomaTrial und die Stiftung Denkmal für die ermordeten Juden Europas produzierte Kurzfilm wird anlässlich des 16. Dezember zum ersten Mal online präsentiert. Am 16. Dezember 1942 ordnete der Reichsführer SS Heinrich Himmler den Auschwitz-Erlass an, nach dem Anfang 1943 die »familienweise« Deportation von Sinti und Roma aus dem Deutschen Reich nach Auschwitz-Birkenau begann. ****English**** »They only take away the criminals«, Zilli Schmidt's father said when the National Socialists arrested the first Sinti and Roma. He was wrong: Almost the entire »happy family«, as Zilli says – was deported to Auschwitz-Birkenau. In the harrowing and at the same time touching animated short film, the 96-year-old Sinti woman tells of the murder of her daughter and most of her family in the gas chambers, of her struggle to survive, her way back to life and her faith after the genocide.
